We had the pleasure to sit down with author Colette Pratt to discuss her debut novel For the Love of a Hustler published earlier this year. Her love for reading and creativity has given her the gift and talent to share her urban love stories.
Tell us about your debut novel For the Love of a Hustler.
For the Love of a Hustler is actually not the first book that I wrote, but it was one of the ones that I was most drawn to so I decided to work on it first. It’s an urban love story about a couple who found the courage to conquer their demons and take a chance on love.
What inspired you to write “For the Love of a Hustler”?
I have always loved to read. I can remember as a young girl being really creative. I am the oldest of four and there were times when my sisters and brothers were too small for me to play with. So, I had the make believe friends and I would set up circumstances and situations for us. That coupled with my love of reading made me wonder if I would be able to write. I read a book that was completely unbelievable and the circumstances did not jelled together. I thought to myself if this person can write this book and sell one copy of it, I can write a story and sell at least two. So I tried my hand at it and it just worked.
Who would you compare your writing style with?
Well, I am a little too new at this to compare myself to anybody. But I enjoy reading Robert Parker’s novels. Back in the 80’s, he had a television show on ABC called Spenser: For Hire that were based on his novels. The books are written from a narrative aspect, written in first person. My writing style is kind of like that whereas the actual individual is telling the story in the story.
Who are some of your favorite author’s?
I like legal thrillers and mysteries. One of my very favorites is John Grisham and I am big John Grisham fan. I also like Lee Childs, who is the author of Jack Reacher story. I like Sandra Brown and I love Terry McMillian. I like Tina Ansa McElroy.
What can the fans look to see from you in 2015?
Well, I am working on a 3 part series which is actually the first three books that I wrote. They are set in Dallas with a little bit of expansion with some of the characters in other places. They are transplant. Because I am from Dallas, as I have lived there for 28 years, that’s my background. Its’ a little different. People write about New York, Chicago, and Virginia and I have not read many books set in Dallas. My stories are set in Dallas.
