Vanessa Carter-Business Owner

SP: What inspired you to start your business?

Vanessa: I started my business at the end of March 2022. It was my children who were my inspiration. I told myself it was time to start my own business to show my children they could become their boss one day.

SP: What was the inspiration behind choosing the name for your business?

Vanessa: Well, it was me, my kids, and their father who sat and thought of a name for our cleaning business. For the most part, all the business names that crossed my mind already existed, so we put our heads together to come up with Mighty & Tidy Cleaning Services, LLC.

SP: How did you define the services for your business?

Vanessa: I offer many different cleaning services to the City of Milwaukee and surrounding areas, rather it’s upholstery cleaning, deep cleaning, quick cleaning, etc.

Some of our work!

SP: Tell us about the woman behind the business.

Vanessa: I am a mother, role model, and businesswoman striving to be the best version of myself. I am a mother to 4 beautiful children who l love dearly. I went back to school to graduate with my HSED and enrolled in College at MATC, currently enrolled in the RN program. I have a beautiful family and a great support system. In about a year in a half, I will be done with school, and I plan to become a Travel RN and continue my business.

SP: What’s your favorite story or customer testimony regarding your service?

Vanessa: Wow, my favorite story. Hmm, well, I get a lot of compliments about how clean their house is and how they haven’t seen their home deep cleaned in a very long time. Some people don’t have time to do deep cleaning due to their work schedules, especially during the pandemic working long hours. A clean home is a happy home!

SP: What was your “power move” to take your business to the next level that would allow you to grow and expand into the market?

Vanessa: Everyday, I’m learning new things about how to promote my business and expand it more. As of right now, I just added new offers from the Mighty & Tidy Cleaning Services, LLC booksy site. We are now selling gift cards that customers can use for any cleaning service of their choice.

SP: Being new in business in 2022, did you face any challenges or barriers being a Black woman in business?  If so, how are you overcoming those challenges/obstacles?

Vanessa: Of course, as a black woman with a small business, it is a little harder to expand my business as fast as possible because I don’t have many connections, capital, or support.  However, I don’t let those barriers stop me. I am going to keep pushing and striving for what I want. My goal is to gain more long-term clients and continue to make people happy and comfortable in a lovely clean home.

SP: What made you say, I am leaving my 9 to 5?

Vanessa: I was tired of working for someone else and running myself crazy every day. I enjoy making my schedule, which allows my clients to book my services based on my availability.

SP: Who inspired you to take your dream to reality. How did they do this?

Vanessa: My children are my biggest inspiration to take my dream to reality. I want my kids to know their mom loves them and that I’m doing everything to show my children that there is nothing in life free. One must work hard to achieve success, and the outcome of hard work that you enjoy doing will be more inspiring, empowering, and purpose-driven than one could ever ask.

SP: How does it make you feel being a Black Woman running your own business?

Vanessa: It feels great knowing I am A young black woman with a vision, and I’m willing to turn my dream into a reality. Many more projects are coming soon, which is just the start of a new business journey for me.

SP: What type of impact do you want on young Black girls and women in your community?

Vanessa: I want Black girls and women to know that just because barriers are present in your path in your life, never allow that to stop them from reaching their goals.  They can do whatever they set their mind to, and little motivation and effort are all it takes. I never pictured myself having four children, attending college, my own business, and more opportunities in my future.

SP: What advice would you give the next Black woman dreaming of starting her own business?

Vanessa: I would say do it without hesitation!  Just do it because you will love the outcome in the end. You’ll make more being your boss than working for someone else, and you will be in control of your time.

Vanessa is a gem, and we at Sistah’s Place enjoy seeing entrepreneurs like her rise to excellence. Keep pressing forward, Vanessa! Learn more about Mighty & Tidy Cleaning Services, LLC by visiting their Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/Mighty-Tidy-Cleaning-Services-103228379013257/
