Had the pleasure to do a Q&A with Saccheen Laing, published poetry author and blogger. She has a unique style and voice that leaves you to ponder on real issues faced by women and men.
Tell Us about your latest novel, called The Poet’s Escape.
My latest poetry book is called The Poets Escape and is filled with poems about real life situations. These poems were written through times of emotional ups and downs as well as observations of those around me. It captures situations that some would stay away from, but there is no topic that I will not write on. My book has a poem for anyone on who picks it up can relate to. It’s a beautiful oasis to escape from when the world becomes overwhelming.
What inspires you to write?
Life is my biggest inspiration. I hardly write about my personal life per say but I’m moved by the lives of others and how the world works. I wouldn’t say anything specific inspires me as I can just say hey I’m going to write and write.
Is there a message you want your audience to recieve after reading Poet’s Escape?
After reading my book, I want people to not feel alone. To know that whatever it is that they are going through someone out there can relate to it and to allow them to feel comfortable with expressing themselves.
Who are some of your favorite poetry authors?
Robert Frost is my favorite poet. I was introduced to his work while studying for my cape exams. I would have to say Lorna Goodson is my favorite Jamaican poet
What are some of your favorite novels?
Some of my favorite novels are to Kill a Mockingbird, Man from Jamaican Hills, and The Silver Sword
Being a blogger, what is it that you like to write about?
My blog is entitled the voice of Jamaica. I try my best to focus on issues affecting my Jamaican people especially the youth. I use my blog to be a positive outlet when everyone seems to be focusing on selling sex. I try to focus on important issues that will influence change in my people.
What is next for you as an author?
Well, what comes next for me as an author is to write my first novel and to continue putting my poetry out there. I would love to become a best seller and to just have people inspired by my work.
