It’s March and I’m still struggling to lose my holiday weight. Yes, I’m still trying to shed pounds from last year’s Thanksgiving and Christmas. Although the holidays are a joyous time to celebrate with loved ones, it’s also the time I tend to pig out the most, indulging into delectable desserts and rich flavored foods. As I’m endeavoring down my weight loss journey, I’m learning working-out and eating healthy is only a fraction to being successful.
Truth & Power in the Tongue
We’ve all heard that saying, “words are a weapon” right? I’m here to tell you there are truth and power in the tongue, you bring life to the things you say. Did you know whatever you want, you can have it by speaking it? Words can stimulate or hurt us but either way they can change our lives.
Proverbs 18:20-21
A man’s belly shall be satisfied with the fruit of his mouth; and with the increase of his lips shall be filled. Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.
We must start declaring what we want, this begins with positive affirmations. Instead of complaining about what you look like now, be grateful you are intelligent and determined to become healthy. Stop with the negative comments about yourself and start beautifying yourself with compliments. You don’t have to tell the world but saying it to yourself in the mirror every morning is motivating. Here are two Bible verses I like to say regarding the outer image:
Psalm 138:8
The Lord will perfect that which concerneth me: thy mercy, O Lord endureth, for ever: forsake not the works of thine own hands.
Psalm 139:14
I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works and that my soul knoweth right well.
For me, repeating those verses are so encouraging and inspiring. I always feel grateful for the way my body looks no matter what because I know The Lord made me beautiful and he makes no mistakes. But when I know my weight is getting out of control, I don’t hate myself for it, I go to The Lord and ask him to perfect those extra pounds. Usually I receive a revelation on healthier food choices, drinking more water and going on 10-minute walks. The point is turning to the Lord will make all those impossible things possible.
It’s important we take time to appreciate who we are, where we are; meaning: enjoy your weight gain and know that it’s temporary. Do not compare yourself to others. Be your own competition and know you are not racing with anyone to perfection.
I’m Fat!
Shedding pounds starts with losing insecurity. Framing your mind in a whole new place will benefit your weight loss journey 10xs more than eating a turkey burger instead of meat lover’s pizza. Once you discover the secret to accepting yourself where you are and as you are now, your outcome will become a lifestyle change and not a temporary fix.
Always watch your words and avoid pessimistic talk. Don’t allow negative thoughts to fill your mind because it will slow your progress, making it harder to accomplish your goals and watering down your faith.
Examples of things to never say:
- I’m fat
- Losing weight is so hard
- I’ll never be skinny
- I have to workout
- I hate working out
- I want to look like Lupita or Beyonce
Once you say the right things, then you need to pack it with faith. A healthy mind is the foundation to change but with a faithful heart you will see everlasting success. It’s true you can do anything when you put your mind to it, but only with faith as the backbone. God did not intend for us to live life alone. He is always with us and no problem is too big or small for Him, so don’t be afraid to ask The Lord for help in your weight loss journey.

Meet Guest Writer Natonya Medford. Ever since I held my first Barbie, I always promoted change. By cutting my own clothes and designing the fabrics to fit my dolls, I realized I was being innovative, strategic and resourceful. With my degree in Public Relations, I finally found a way to walk down the fashion runway and it’s through writing. Fashion PR is the best of two worlds for me, fashion and communication. After contributing to magazines and collaborating with fashion companies in affiliate marketing through Polyvore, I’m ready to plant my stilettos into writing. I want to change the direction of the fashion industry by focusing on inner beauty first. I plan to strut down the catwalk of writing with faith and confidence by my side.
