Have you ever gone on vacation, returned home and needed a vacation after your vacation? Have you ever taken time off from your job only to fill your time off with other projects? If you answered yes to either question then you may have an issue with knowing how to be still. There is so much that we should do, many things that we can do, but often we forget that sometimes we need to do “nothing.”
Time goes by fast and it feels as if you don’t have a minute to waste. Did you ever consider the fact that with a lot of busy work that is exactly what you are doing; wasting minutes, hours, days, weeks and even years keeping busy. As they say, every good idea is not a God idea. We are all here for a reason, a purpose. God has a plan for our lives. Do you know what your purpose is? Be still so that you can find out your purpose.
Life presents each of us with many challenges. Some have issues with their families, relationships that end, love ones that have pass away and so on. Often times instead of taking the time to deal with our feelings we just find something to do. Keeping busy doesn’t get rid of pain or hurt, it just buries it. Are you so busy because you are actually running away from pain or hurt? Be still so that God can restore you.
Our physical health is important. Our mental health is just as important. It is not good to run your body non-stop without sleep. Neither is it good to run your mind non-stop either. When you are able to take a break, take a break. Don’t think about things in the past. Don’t think about what you will do next. Just relax. Give yourself permission to relax.
I like to set goals and accomplish them. I like to be organized and plan things out. One of the most important things I have learned is the importance of down time. I actually plan time in my schedule to do absolutely nothing because I know how important it is. I use the time to listen to God, to talk to God about what is bothering me or just to relax. No radio, no television, no telephone. Just me, myself and I. You don’t need a lot of time. As little as fifteen minutes will do you some good.
Are you running your life or is your life running you? It is time that you take control. Work hard and work smart, make the time or take the time to just “be still.”

Awesome! “Be Still”, this article by Aretha Tatum blessed me immensely. Currently, Mourning the recent loss of my Dad,the contents of this article gave me a sense of comfort and encouragement to “be still” and allow GOD to heal and restore my broken heart; as I have lost the only man on earth that I knew really loved and cared about me.
Thanks for such an awesome article.
Wow! What a timely article! This is definitely an area of improvement needed in my life. Being still is a necessity for appropriate recovery. As a computer needs a reboot and time to clear out the cookies, so do we! Taking a Sabbath is not just a suggestion in the word of God, it’s a necessity!
I met Ms. Tatum through my aunt. She is a powerful and zealous woman of God!! I had the privilege to be taught by her in Sunday school and she is an amazing teacher. I recommend both of her books because of her genuine nature, ability to teach and skill to write.
This article really blessed me! I so needed that reminder to “Be Still” and watch God move. God Bless your ministry Minister Tatum!!
