Over the weekend we had the pleasure to see “The Hate You Give” based on the novel by Angie Thomas. This movie brings reality to the big screen. The movie has a strong message that educates our children, young adults, and brings light to the issues happening today.
When you see a movie like this on the big screen after seeing it as just a headline for months the movie brings more truth to the emotional topic. I commend the cast for an outstanding performance to bring Ms. Thomas’s characters and storyline to life. As I watched my nieces sit in awe of the injustice that occurred with Khlaie Harris, they understood the instructions for survival when they are stopped by police.
It was a rollercoaster of emotions through out the movie. Amanda Sternberg kept my eyes watered as she portrayed Starr Carter. Being a parent, you don’t want to experience your child not coming home because they were pulled over for a mere traffic violation. What do you say to your children? The title of this movie has a strong message for all of every age because we all can learn from this storyline. The title itself is a generational curse that is planted as a seed. Hate is learned and taught and passed down to each generation.
The Hate U Give
The acrimony of the title itself spells Thug, taking from Tupac’s Thug Life. The ugly words of racism, or indifference because of our skin color. The sad part about this is the injustice results for the lives taken because they wear a badge does not justify negligence.
Let’s break the generational curses and stop teaching our children hate. This movie is worth taking your children, friends, and family members for a powerful and heartfelt movie. Check out the trailer below and go see this movie.
