Tell us about who Paddy Tyrrell Is.

I was raised in Kent, the garden of England, and lived in an Oast House whose round rooms were once used for drying hops. That must be why I have enjoyed a drink ever since!

At university, I fell in love with medieval French writing, discovered The Gormenghast Trilogy, and became hooked on fantasy.

I have sailed down the Yangste, survived an earthquake in Cairo, and picnicked in the Serengeti. My travels for work and pleasure have inspired my fantasy world.

I now live in France with a naughty Australian Labradoodle, a jealous cat, and a squash mad husband. Our two huskies, Ice, and Sapphire are sadly now gone but are transformed into wolves and immortalized in my book.

What was it that made you decide to writer your first book?

Fantasy writing had appealed ever since I followed a course on mediaeval French literature. I had wanted to write since childhood but the need for my book to be perfect blocked me from making the attempt for many years. Finally, I realized I didn’t have to discover the meaning of life and it was OK to write an adventure story that readers would enjoy – in fact the sort of story I enjoyed.

what inspired your book title?

Lumina is an epic fantasy and the first in a trilogy called The Dragonlite Legacy. The dragonlites clean the scales of the dragons. The magic of a sorcerer leads the dragonlites to bite and inject pregnant women and so create a new race. The first book is called Lumina because I wanted to portray two contrasting societies.

One, Lumina itself, is sophisticated and civilized, governed by reason, not magic. The other is brutal, barbaric, and controlled through tyranny and sorcery. Hence the name Lumina because of the light it brings to civilization.

Without giving too much away, tell us what your story is about?

The birth of golden babies in Lumina heralds the onset of war. The people take fright at the golden children. They segregate them, call them bronzites, and banish them to the corners of the realm. A dangerous move. The Dragon King is attacking the country’s borders. If he wins support from the bronzites, Lumina is lost.

Davron cannot share his people’s hatred of the children and when he discovers he has a bronzite brother, he sets out to find him. At his side travels Chrystala. A bronzite, she has twice his strength and three times his determination.

But then the Black Dragon kidnaps Chrystala, and Davron is faced with a terrible choice: save his friend or save his nation.

Is there a message you like readers to walk away with after reading Lumina?

How racial prejudice harms everyone. The importance of friendship and the essential equality of races.

What makes your book stand out from all the rest in your genre?

With Lumina I wanted to create a captivating story and much more. There are adventures and thrills to provide an exciting page-turning quality, but at the same time I want the reader to experience the characters’ emotions as they face challenges. Through these challenges the key characters develop their personalities and their friendships. Adding yet more depth there is the contrast between two cultures and the struggle for power, while at the heart of the story are racial tensions and inequalities.
